WA Mentor Update March 2017
Walk then Run
Just so you know, 2 to 5 December 2017 will see a P3 Coach, Doug Forth come over to the West and we will all have the opportunity gain skills and knowledge from one of the best. The plan for WA is for the event to be run as a Big Way learning camp. We will be running three days of one aircraft. You will have the chance to dive, float and be in the base. It doesn’t matter whether you are 60kg or 120kg you will be given the knowledge and the opportunity to put that knowledge into practice to be in the base or the last diver for a 16 way. The last day of the event will take us to formation loads. Two caravans. We may be doing 16 ways out of two aircraft or 32 ways – it all depends on our progression as a team. I don’t know about you, but I’m excited and I’ve booked my holidays and I’m looking out for registration (It should be in June). Thanks to the WA State Council funding has been allocated to support the event which will meet some of the costs of bringing such a great coach out to Australia for the Moruya and York events.
So what has that got to do with running? Well, the December event is for all WA jumpers to progress from a walk into a nice steady jog and to give you the confidence to see that you have to ability and the stamina for the long haul in 2019 when we go as a team to Skydive Perris, USA, for the Aussie Large Formation Record. The December event will give you a taste for big ways and you won’t look back.
Meanwhile, if you feel you are only just toddling don’t be disheartened there is plenty of time to get your skills up and be ready for the event – even if you are only just finishing your Certificate B jumps. You can start by thinking about putting a team together and doing some regular 4 way, even if it’s only a casual team. You can also look out for organised events.
There was a 4 Way for Every 1 held at the beginning of February with some great flying by guys who had only just completed their Bs. It was terrific to have all the teams being debriefed at the same time so we could all learn from each other’s jumps. Thanks to Ash Rumbo for organising the event and the terrific set of notes for the intermediate dive pool that was provided.
Team jumping is a really good way of developing your skills and you can even compete. The APF has a number of E League events you can get involved with and, in case you haven’t heard, the National Championships are going to be held in York later this month. Check out the APF website – just scroll down to the bottom on the page to see what’s going on. If you haven’t got your Star Crest yet then getting some mates together to do regular 4 way is the best way of honing those skills. Just remember you have to walk before you can run. If you are having difficulty getting a regular group together then check out what might be happening at your local DZ through the FB event pages, Aussie Big Way calendar and the APF calendar.
Load organising for anything from 2 ways to Star Crests is continuing at York with Rummy Clarke, Red Ferguson, Peta Holmes, Steve Hogden, Matt Holmes and Darragh Flynn rotating duties. The last event for Feb was organised by Rummy and supported by his 4 way team The Screaming Eagles made up of Shorty, Graeme White and Vince Jones. They started with 4 to 6 ways and finished with a couple of 10 ways.
