WA Mentor Update February 2018
New Year’s Resolution
We are now one month into 2018 and now I can start talking to all WA jumpers about the Aussie Bigways Premier Event with Larry Henderson scheduled for 28 Sept to 6 October in Toogoolawah as the last National training event before next year’s Aussie Bigway Camp & Record Event. Yes, the event we’ve been planning for four years is now only 16 months away.
So if you want to be a part of it what have you got to do to be there?
- Make it your goal and say it out load – voice it to everyone. Don’t be shy, you have what it takes but you might need some help to fine tune it all
- Identify what you need to work on – Do you have the skills, knowledge and attitude to be a successful team player. Where are your skills now and what do you need to improve
- Check out the Skills Development and Pro Tips pages on the Aussie Bigways website.
- Identify a coach or mentor who can help you achieve your goals.
- Work out your budget for training events and the record event and start saving.
- Get into a 4-way or 8-way team – it gives you focus, keeps you current and provides many of skills required to be a successful team player.
- Aim to be a team player in the air and on the ground.
- Attend as many training events as you can afford.
I know that WA is a long way from the East Coast and there is a larger population of skydivers over there and more events scheduled because there is a larger population. I know that travel adds an additional cost to any event and I know that the economies of scale make it difficult for big way events to be economically viable in WA. So sometimes you have to travel to get the experience. Select the events that you are going to get the most from in terms of coaching, skill development and learning.
A Boogie may be good fun but not the environment for a large amount of learning and skill development. Nothing wrong with going to Boogies they are the events that bring us all together, make us the family that we are, but they are not the events where you would expect to be getting some serious coaching for skill development. If you go along to a Boogie set yourself some personal goals to work on in your jumping while you are having fun. You can do the same when you attend Star Crest days. For example, aim to get there quicker, stop sooner, fly in your slot without picking up the grip right to the point when you have to complete the formation. Be the best you can, every time. Talking about Boogies, Rummy and I will be load organising at the Big T Megaaaa Boogie to be held in York March 28 to April 1 2018. We would love to see you there.
This month I would like to congratulate Maddy Gouge, who at 16 has just completed her Star Crest in three jumps. I’m looking forward to doing lots of jumping with Maddy over the coming years.
Rummy and I are still working on the schedule for WA over the next 16 months. I can tell you that we are trying to get a coach to come and visit us from the East (they will have to travel the long distance) to do 16 ways with us over the June long weekend so save that date.
