VIC Mentor Update for Barwon Heads – October 2018

VIC Mentor Update for Barwon Heads - October 2018

It’s easy to feel inspired when surrounded by greatness in the Aussie Bigways team.

I’ve just enjoyed an incredible two weeks in Queensland, at the Larry Henderson camp in Toogoolawah and then at the World Meet at the Gold Coast.

At the WPC, one of our Aussie Bigways coaches, Melissa Harvie, broke the national 4-way record with a 32-point round in the women’s 4-way. Another of our coaches, Andrew ‘AB’ Barker broke the 8-way record with 21 points. Janine Hayes and Mike Dyer had recently returned from the Accuracy World Meet in Bulgaria and were busy in their Gold Coast roles as hard-working volunteers. Stretch Szulmayer and Sandy Nieuwenhoven were there as volunteers too. Steve Tonson and Steve Fitchett did Australia proud with their camera work.

Before that, I’d been at the Larry Henderson camp, thrilled with the performance of all the Victorians who headed up there, and proud of the whole team’s progress. It’s less than two years since we took quite a few days to build up to 32 ways in Nagambie. In Toogs, we did 30 ways from just the second jumping day.

PLUS we pulled off 2-point 45-ways – THREE OF THEM – on only the 4th day of actual jumping. Three of us Victorians – Janine, Christian and I – were privileged to build our coaching knowledge as ‘Shadow Coaches’ for the camp. Watching Larry in action was unforgettable.

And some of the Victorians were also lucky to be part of the C17 display into Surfers Paradise. (Thanks for pics by Fitch, Al Ware and John Winkler.)

What a blast! So much talent in one place and all these amazing people share the same goal as me for Perris in just 7 months.

Amidst all of the excitement I caught up with my old mate Kim Hardwick, who was on the first 2-point 100-way in Florida in 1992. They did it from 16,500 feet on about their 15th attempt. The second point was a fantastic looking ring-inside-ring formation that looks perfect on her wall.

It was a great motivator for me, and a special memory for Kim. If you want to do something special, something that will still be a strong memory in 30 years, come and join the Aussie Bigways team for next year’s record effort. We are doing it with resources, knowledge, organisational nous and effort. We are doing it with the skills of many super talented leaders who are patiently helping us build our strength as a team. And we are doing it with a tireless co-ordinator who keeps on serving up more. Thanks Tracey Basman!!!

If you haven’t been to an Aussie Bigways camp, I urge you to go to Moruya for the Dan BC camp in early December Click Link Here

This will be a chance for people who are going to Perris to get some feedback from Dan BC. It’ll also be a great chance to get together and celebrate our growing sense of ‘team’.

At a local level, our Star Crests fire up at Barwon Heads next Saturday. There is something in this for everybody, with the chance to help others and work on your own skills as well. I had to cancel the Melbourne Cup weekend, and I’ll be looking at a potential replacement event if I can find a calendar gap in 2019.

Bring on a big and beautiful summer!
