SA Mentor Update August 2017
It was all go in SA the last 2 months 🙂
We held our largest state meet in at least 10 years in mid June at Lower Light. All the hard work that event organisers have done over the past year paid off with a massive turn out. We enticed people to participate by bringing in a Cresco to give SA jumpers a bit of turbine time and providing all of the camera slots to registered teams, plus providing a well organised event. We had competitors in 4 way FS blast, 2 way FS, Sport accuracy, 2 way CRW open and inter, and 2 way HU FF. At the end of the event we tried for an all girls state record, missed it by 1 grip. Considering we had 2 girls with around 100 jumps on it we were pretty happy with the results. It was great to see all of the drop zones in SA come together.
Mid July 3 SA girls decided to try their hand at judging. Gail Bradley kindly came over to train Sammie Harper, Eva Varga and myself, with Barrie Bremner from Vic joining us too. 2 tiring days later we had judged the 2015 Nationals, gone through the rules and all felt quite good about our new found skill. We are all now “trainee judges”
SA didn’t stop there, at the end of July Langhorne Creek hosted a Flygirls event to encourage more women into the sport. The boys were welcome too but the event was female focussed, the boys also seemed to like packing our rigs! Jill Grantham came over to coach Freefly, Laura Watson and Myself coached RW and special guest speaker Helen McKerrill spoke of her experiences with overcoming fear in hang gliding. Saturday was blown out so the experienced girls were asked to present on topics of interest to the more junior girls, we had some really great sessions with lots of skills based seminars. Sunday we tried for our girls record attempt again but it wasn’t to be, we got close but the weather gods had left us with no chances to practice. It was great to see the excitement on all the faces during practice and the climb to height, we had girls who had never done formation loads and girls who had never been on a 10 way before so even without the record we had so many firsts it was worth it. It was lovely to have people from a mix of disciplines on the jump, although it was hard to reign in the excitement of the free flyers wanting to turn our RW jump into a hybrid :). Love you girls xx

Happy flying!
