Our National Direction
There are many Bigway events currently on our calendar leading up to our Premier Events with Doug Forth later this year. These events are very important training and currency events prior to attempting Australian Sequential Record(s) at Moruya, and for York to be current and safe in jumping bigway formation loads.

Bigways are here – happening around our country right now – coached by our best and supported by the APF and State Councils. Get on board NOW to train and get currency for these Premier Events. If you can’t make the Premier events it doesn’t mean you miss out on all the fun! We welcome you to join us in these lead up events – maybe you want to try your hand at Bigways or can’t get the time off work for the Doug Forth events but can make a weekend jumping Bigways with our Aussie Coaches whilst they are available.

Nationals 2018

Once our Premier Events tick over in December, we will be shifting gears in supporting 4way and 8way teams to form and train for Nationals next March. Nationals 2018 will be at Skydive Nagambie, Victoria. Many of our Bigway coaches will be training in teams for Nationals and the World Meet. Why is Aussie Bigways promoting Nationals? How does this benefit our team in building a 150way Aussie Record in 2019?

I’m glad you asked these questions!

Training in a 4way and/or 8way team is the best training for building successful Bigway formations; by mastering your RW skills in a smaller group environment. Add competition in the mix and it is perfect training to perform under pressure. National Record attempts can be stressful and training in a competition environment helps a jumper overcome this potential performance barrier of butterfly nerves. You may not know it is a barrier to performance until that first competition or record jump! Nationals also provides an end goal of performance for team participants.

There are now 4 divisions to enter in 4way – Blast, A, AA and AAA. Whatever your skill level as participant or coach, you are now accommodated at a competition level.

POPS World Meet 2018

The POPS World Meet is April 2018 also hosted by Skydive Nagambie. This is an event for any skydiver over Forty. For those in this age category it would be a no-brainer to continue your 4way team’s journey to compete at this event, exposing yourself to another competition environment. Imagine coming home with a POPS Medal?! Noice! You will meet up with skydivers from around the world – this event offers so much for the social skydiver out for having loads of fun!

Discovering our Identity
Bigways are alive and well, and it wasn’t until coaching at the Batchelor Rel Week a few weeks ago did I come to that realisation. Another light bulb moment was just how much knowledge we have gained in jumping Bigway Formation Skydiving. Loads! We, as RW and Bigway Flyers, have much to brag about in our accomplishments in all facets of skydiving, leading the way in most situations.

With that said, I have always struggled with this relatively new term given to our discipline that I feel doesn’t do us justice. ‘Flat flying’ conjures up visions of flat tyres, feeling blue or not well. ‘Belly flying’ are visions of tassels, belly piercings and midriff wobbles in some dancing pose. Jumping good 4way, 8way or Bigways is so far from those conjured up visions.

Davey made mention the other month – let’s bring back ‘RW’. We are after all the ultimate ‘Relative Work’ group as Bigway jumpers. All disciplines in our sport attempt Relative Work using basic concepts of those who came before us that were ‘flat flying’. Also to note – as a Bigway group we are still improving our discipline through lessons learned along the way; we are still documenting our journey to assist those yet to begin. Stand tall as RW jumpers, or you might say ‘Rel’, as we have much to be proud of with skills to impart to those old and new in our sport.

State Mentor for NSWRobbo
I would like to welcome Robbo Robertson as our latest Aussie Bigways State Mentor based in Elderslie, NSW. Robbo is not only good looking but he has been around the block a few times when it comes to skydiving. He started jumping in 1985, has 4800 jumps, numerous ratings including Instructor B and AFF Instructor; he was our Aussie Top POP for 10 years and organised many key events around Australia, and participated in more events you can shake a stick at around the World, including 100way camps in Perris, USA. He was on the POPS 32 way in 1985 and then the POPS 42way record in Perris 2012. He attended our Aussie 2015 record event in Perris. Robbo certainly understands what it takes to make a record. He has been there, done that, and is in a perfect position to mentor those keen to join the team for building our next largest formation in 2019.
