WA Mentor Update September 2016

Weather is our enemy, still!!

We seem to have fallen into the pattern of nice weather during the week and not so nice weather on the weekends.  This means that we don’t always get to complete the number of jumps, or the events, we were planning for.

We were hampered by storm warnings at the beginning of the month but persevered with the planned 8way weekend and had a great time finishing the weekend with a 16 way. The enthusiasm is such that we are hoping to form 3 teams for the State Championships scheduled for 4 to 7 November.  Later in the month Joe, Rummy Clarke ran a Star Crest day at Skydive York with two participants getting two of their Star Crest jumps completed.

Peta Holmes and I decided to hone our skills and participated in a Dimensions Supercharge Boost tunnel camp at Penrith run and coached by Melissa Harvie with coaching support from Laurence Garceau (LG).  We were fortunate enough to be included in the Dimensions invitational jump day, where we got to jump with a great group of jumpers and do some challenging 12 ways.  Thanks to all involved especially SteveTonson for the camera.  I would highly recommend getting some tunnel time and coaching. And the Perth Ifly tunnel will be opening this year.  Ask me, or Peta, about the Dimensions’ tunnel coaching or just about getting some tunnel experience to help you with your skills development.

The end of the month was supposed to finish with an introduction to Big Ways event to be hosted by Skydive York but the weather defeated us.  It rained so much that the runway was soggy and when the wind came to dry it out it was too windy to jump.  We didn’t waste any time though.  The few people that braved the weather in the hope of getting in some jumps got the opportunity to view some footage from the 2010 Aussie National Large FS records.  The footage provided some great visuals of sheep dogging, stadium approaches, stopping before picking up grips and tracking teams. There was also an opportunity to talk flying your canopy with such a large group and other safety matter.  This event will be rescheduled for later in the year when we may be able to guarantee better weather.
