WA Mentor Update August 2016
Weather is our enemy
The 1st of July brought about an air of excitement in WA and it wasn’t due to any event that was being held here, but the opening of registrations for the Dan BC event in December at Nagambie. There was some concern that an opening time for registrations of 5pm EST was going to disadvantage those in the west who may not be able to get online whilst at work. As it turned out all was good. WA will be well represented with at least 14 people going to the event. Turns out there were others that couldn’t get leave which is really disappointing but remember there are national and international events that you can consider as alternatives. There is the Equinox Boogie at Toogoolawah in October with Greg Jack and Stretch load organising flat flying. You could also consider getting a group together and doing a P3 camp at Perris Valley, California next year.
Having got all excited about the Dan BC event the month then went into a weather slump. The Star Crest event scheduled to be held at Pinjarra, thanks to the sponsorship of the WA Skydiving Academy, had to be rescheduled due to storms and when it was held on the 23rd June we didn’t have one person wanting to go for their Star Crest. So what to do when you have 9 people all ready to do Star Crest loads?? Do Big Way practice. The weather was not the best and we did have to land with the plane due to cloud and rain on one load. Other than that we were able to put 3 jumps together that gave people practice at diving – there is certainly room for improvement on stack-up, exit time(from first to last) and presentation. With the cameraman staying on the step until the last person exits no one can deny how big the gaps wereJ.
The forecast for the 30th July wasn’t great so we scheduled a later start for a Star Crest day at Skydive York. As it turned out it wasn’t the weather that reduced the number of jumps we got. It was a flat tyre on the caravan. All credit to Tom Gilmartin and Skydive York who got it sorted out and we continued on, achieving four jumps. Thanks to Stu Barton on camera and Skydive York for sponsorship.
What’s to come? Open your diary now and start to plan for August. The 6/7 August has an invitational 8 way weekend happening at Skydive York. This is an opportunity for those that participated in the Simone Bambach 8way Development Roadshow to consolidate on what they have learnt. This event has been sponsored by Skydive York. Joe Rummy Clarke will be running a Star Crest Saturday on the 13th August also supported by Skydive York. Thanks to sponsorship from Skydive Jurien Bay Red Ferguson and Pete Waller will be running a Star Crest & belly flying weekend on the 20/21 August. To finish the month off Shirley will be running an introduction to Big Way Skills weekend on the 27th and 28th of August thanks to the support of Skydive York. Keep an eye on the Aussie Bigways calendar as well as the FB pages for the Aussie Bigways and all our sponsors.
