WA Mentor Update July 2016
Getting Bigger
The June long-weekend resulted in twenty-one participants, including camera, getting to know the excitement and frustration of 8 Way. Simone Bambach visited the west with her 8 way Development Roadshow. All participants learnt lots over the two days and the enthusiasm was so great that most of the participants are planning a consolidation weekend in August. Slots will initially be available to those that had participated in the June weekend but may be opened up to others depending upon numbers. The weekend was challenging, and I’m not just talking about the skydiving. Two caravan aircraft become inoperable and the third had radio issues that prevented it from flying at York. What did we do? Relocated to Pinjarra for the Sunday.
Sponsorship for this event was provided by the APF Fi Fund, Skydive York and the WA State Parachute Council. Special thanks goes to Tom Gilmartin, of Skydive York, for doing everything he could to make aircraft available and to Robin O’Neill, of the WA Skydiving Academy, who allowed us to relocate to the Pinjarra DZ on the Sunday and honoured all the conditions of slot price that had been agreed to with Skydive York.

A Star Crest and Big Way practice day was held on 16th June and it seems that the 8 way weekend may have rekindled some enthusiasm in flatfly jumpers. Two 10 way groups were formed with Shirley Cowcher acting as player coach for one group and Dixie Lee acting as ground coach for the other group. It was a successful day with two participants gaining their Star Crest and a third needing only one more. Thanks to Skydive York for supporting this event.
There has been some interest expressed in the Dan BC event and wanting a couple of events that are specific to Big Way flying so keep an eye out as some 16 way events will be coming up but also remember you can still practice your Big Way skills whilst helping out on the Star Crest days.
