State Mentors UpdateWe all need SKA!
I’m not talking about the pre-reggae Jamaican sound or the Square Kilometre Array project. I’m talking about jumpers in WA developing SKAs that they can display and talk about over drinks at the end of the day. You know the chat “I got this one when I did that Star Crest jump last month and that one doing the Canopy Course with Kev. Oh and I remember getting that one when I wouldn’t stop talking and listen when a load organiser was trying to debrief…”I’m talking about the Skills, Knowledge and Attitude (SKA) you get from following a structured progression from completion of Certificate B through to the next Aussie Big Way Record Attempt. In WA there is a group of 2012 Aussie Big Way participants who know the importance of SKAs when it comes to being part of a successful record attempt and as a group they are all willing to help WA jumpers be a part of the next large formation skydiving record. So what’s happening in WA that can get you the SKAs you can proudly display and brag about? A busy month in NSW!Firstly, we had a mid-month Bigway weekend. Saturday was Starcrests with LG and Greg Hamilton as coaches. We had 6 candidates and all 6 candidates receive their starcrest on the day. Our new starcresties are, Diego Quevedo, Nicole Wosinski, Yuri Melo, Andrew Ravenscroft, Amanda Lavis and Vivian Merz. They were joined by a dedicated group of experienced jumpers helping them out. Many of the helpers were fresh off their Starcrests in March showing what they had learned, setting formations and giving the candidates the best chance for success.A successful Starcest Saturday was followed by a stunning Bigway Sunday, 15th May, with Vivian Mertz joining the Bigway team after her successful Starcest the day before. The plan was for people to try things that were new to them, Mary Nguyen and Bec Dengate doing well as late divers for the first time and Derek Murphy proving that he as equally versatile on the edge of a 16 way as he is in the base. On jump two our efforts were rewarded by a beautiful completion, held for 10 seconds.Simone Bambach ground coached her third successful 8way Skills Development camp at Picton at the end of May. Over the three weekend camps, there were 36 participants from all over Australia! Simone imparted gems to players, such as the dynamics of 8way exits, managing levels and flying your slot. Basic skydiving rules were repeated in such a way that made sense not only for 8way, but for 4way and Bigways in general. Read full report and picture, click here… Starting off in April we started off with a Bigway event being coached by Dave Loncasty from Sydney. After the first day the group was dwindled down with breakaway small group being taken up and coached by Tracey Basman. See these links to see how they went! Video Later there was an 8way weekend being coached by Simone Bambach. This event ran for 2 days with most of the group not having done much 8way in the past A lot was learned by all who participated. Over the last weekend of April, we had a Star Crest Weekend. This was run by myself. Due to weather only 3 jumps were completed. We had 3 people attempting their Star Crest jumps on each jump and 2 people were successful in obtaining their rating. For full report and pictures view here…. There will be 4way training day at Langhorne Creek Drop zone on the 25th June to prepare for the SA State Meet. Please contact Sandy if you require more information: SAmentor@aussiebigways.com
Langhorne Creek hosted a Star Crest weekend in May organised by Rhys Savage. There were some weather issues, which meant the second day had to be postponed. Pictures below from the event. Al Gray and myself are participating in Melissa Harvie’s Supercharge Tunnel Camp Program from 10-12 June to up-skill for Bigways. We plan to pass on this knowledge locally… stay tuned!!For full report and pictures, click here… Victorian skydivers are getting behind the Bigway 2019 record with a variety of events and ongoing skill development weekends.
