AUSTRALIAN LARGE FORMATION RECORD EVENT
MAY 2019
PERRIS VALLEY, USA
UPDATE NUMBER 1
Hello Everyone
Firstly I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and has an AWESOME New Year.
Much has transpired since that fantastic last day of May 2015 when on the last jump of the last day of the Event we broke the existing National Large Formation Record and set a new mark of 119!
We enjoyed massive National and International media coverage due mostly to the magnificent efforts of Kelly Brennan. We also enjoyed fantastic financial support from the APF and the Fi Fund – huge thanks to Pam Riggs for that and we had terrific sponsorship from Indoor Skydive Australia and Cookie Composites.
A survey was sent out to all those who attended the Event in May and we got back a terrific response to a series of questions as to where and how we go forward from the May 2015 record setting event.
So we have a little “Initial Organising Committee” that has got together – Tracey Basman, Melissa Harvie, Dave Loncasty and myself and YES we are at it again!!!
Now based on our survey results and our experience from 3 previous Aussie National Event adventures to Perris Valley, USA the following has been set up for the next assault on our Australian Nation Record:
Where: Perris Valley USA
When: May 2019 – exact dates TBC
With who: The P3 Team
Event Aim: A formation size of up to 150
Tracey is taking on the role to organise National events and support Mentors in each State to share knowledge, information and her experience in organising State based events and progression pathways for bigway team members.
Tracey has been working hard behind the scenes recruiting and we would like to introduce our State Mentors for our journey to Perris 2019:
WA Shirley Cowcher
SA Sandy Nieuwenhoven
VIC Janine Hayes (J9)
NSW Calder Chernoff
QLD Ben Nordkamp
These awesome five people will be heading up some exciting events in their State. They are voluntary champions of our sport who deserve respect and appreciation for the efforts they will be putting into this sport over the next few years.
State Mentor Roles and Responsibilities include:
- Proactive in identifying, nurturing and guiding anyone showing interest in the next Aussie Big Way Record Event in Perris 2019.
- Support and assist jumpers to upskill in preparation for Perris 2019 – providing information on where to obtain quality coaching
- Co-ordinate 4way, 8way and Star Crest events to all concerned – as a training platform for Bigways
- Facilitate / Organise Bigway events – securing competent coaches who use P3 methodology
- Promote the next Aussie Record attempt in Perris 2019.
- Manage their states ‘Calendar of Events’ to ensure dates align for participants to attend these events
We will be planning a series of events [much along the results of the Survey] under the banner of “Aussie Big ways” which will be planned and organised by Tracey and our State Mentors. These events will include Starcrest days/weekends, 4 & 8 Way events, single and multiple aircraft events for up to 4 days duration and one Large [National] event each year [2016/2017/2018] at different locations around Australia which will provide people with the opportunity to develop and advance their Big Way skills, and also meet and jump with other Team Members.

Dave L is refining UltraOz goals to include:
In addition to coached bigway camps, David Loncasty is heading up an initiative to organise sequential records here on our home soil. He has just finished organising a two plane formation load weekend at Sydney Skydivers as a “first round” of a “Sequential Record Qualifier” series.
More events on different DZ’s are planned for the years ahead, so please keep your eyes on the website and the regular Updates for future events and plan to attend!
Dave L is refining UltraOz goals to include:
- Fast exits to sub 15 second first builds
- Unique formations engineering
- Precise flying for intricate points, no cheated grips
- Large piece moves
- Outfacing challenging points remain high in the list of goals
In response to your feedback for greater transparency of what it takes to be successful, Melissa has compiled and will maintain a ‘Skills and Event Guide’ that clarifies the best practice skills, knowledge and attitude to participate in large formations and in our Australian events. This Guide will shortly be available on the website and will be used by our Mentors and coaches in organising events and providing participant feedback. You can use it too, to plot your own pathway to your personal skydiving goals.
The tunnel remains a key tool in skills development, Melissa and LG are teaming up again to organise Aussie Bigways tunnel camps, a great way to work on specific skills, meet likeminded people and experience a range of coaching styles and perspectives.
In her own coaching, Melissa has created outcomes based Programs to give you the tools to fly your body with confidence and control relative to others. If you want to fast track your ability and your participation in our Aussie Bigways events, check them out!
There is a lot here gang as we get off and running for 2019. We are raising the bar once again and so will need to arrive in Perris better all-round skydivers and more experienced and versed in Big Way techniques to achieve our next goal. To support this we aim to be structured in providing information, feedback and even more opportunities for people to learn the necessary skills to be part of the Team representing Australian Skydiving in May 2019. I look forward to sharing this journey with you all.
How lucky are we !
Jump safe and see you all in Perris very, very, VERY soon!
Blue Skies,
Greg
