Note – Participants should aim to learn the skills that would enable them to be suitable for a variety of slot types noting that greater flexibility in the slots they can perform will increase the likelihood of them being included in the record as there are only so many of each slot to go around.
Context
A base level of skill is required for all slots in a big way record
Personal flying skills – to include:
– Controlled body position, ability to pick up grips without momentum, be ‘static’, be docked on and set up in relation to others and their slot.
– Tracking skills – ability to flat track safely with awareness of others
– Canopy skills
– Physical capabilities
– Mental capabilities
– Equipment
– Dirtdiving capabilities
– Debriefing capabilities
– Team capabilities
Also:
– A knowledge of the P3 methodology and a demonstrated understanding and ability to apply the principles and concepts whilst acting safely and responsibly
Context
– A few slots will be available in the exit chunk to fly with the organisers and provide the initial ‘base’ for the formation
– The ability to launch a ‘chunk’, maintain fall rate and heading, manage tension and be ‘strong’ are typical qualities required
Exit
– Present to the air with grips, diving or floating in co ordination with others typically from a tailgate aircraft
– Maintain heading, fall rate and proximity whilst grip switching to form a solid formation
Freefall
– Maintain grips
– Maintain heading
– Maintain fall rate
– Altitude awareness and ability to mirror a ‘break off’ key given by an organiser
Tracking, canopy flight and landing
– Personal flat track with consideration to prior tracking groups
– Canopy control and awareness amongst a large number of canopies, landing safely in a pattern in a designated area and according to a set direction
Context
– In a 100+ way, the base group can be 30+ people depending on the formation
– The base needs to build efficiently to ensure enough time is left for other team members to dock
– The base needs to maintain fall rate, heading and grips even if later team members arrive with momentum / lift
– Base team members will typically track in later waves after the first one or two tracking groups have left the formation, this requires high vigilence in tracking and deployment phases as there will be people / canopies in front, around and behind
Exit
– Floater / early / mid diver
Freefall
– Get close to the base and dock in slot (without delay)
– Maintain designated heading and fall rate
– Manage ‘distractions’ as other people dock and not let any momentum pass through to others
Tracking, canopy flight and landing
– Track on level with consideration to other body types
– Personal flat track with consideration to others and prior / later tracking waves
– Participate in a tracking group
– Lead a tracking group
– Canopy control and awareness amongst a large number of canopies, landing safely in a pattern in a designated area and according to a set direction
Context
– This layer typically builds the ‘anchor’ slots for later divers
– Team members in these slots need the skill to visualise their approach and their slot before the formation might have much structure and to fly to their radial in their traffic pattern and into their slot with precision and efficiency so as to give guidance to their peers and to later divers
– These slots are typically docked on by later divers and will need to manage the potential for ‘lift’ being introduced by lighter flyers not flying their slot properly or rushing to pick up the grip so as to achieve a record!
– Mid layer flyers need to maintain fall rate, heading and grips even if later team members arrive with momentum
– Mid layer flyers will typically track in waves after the first tracking group has left the formation, this requires high vigilence in tracking and deployment phases as there will be people /
canopies in front, around and behind
Exit
– Floater / early / mid diver
Freefall
– Identify and fly slot in stadium and on radial with consideration to those in front, around and behind
– Lead a group / sector into the formation
– Dock in slot
– Maintain designated heading and fall rate
– Manage ‘distractions’ as other people dock and not let any momentum pass through to others
Tracking, canopy flight and landing
– Track on level with consideration to other body types
– Personal flat track with consideration to others and prior / later tracking waves
– Participate in a tracking group
– Lead a tracking group
– Safely join or lead a tracking group whilst still in the stadium
– Canopy control and awareness amongst a large number of canopies, landing safely in a pattern in a designated area and according to a set direction
Context
– These team members are typically last to dock and under pressure to be and stay close to the formation ready to pick up their grip as soon as the opportunity to do so appropriately presents itself (so that the record can be achieved!)
– Team members in these slots need the skill to visualise their approach and their slot before the formation might have much structure and to fly to their radial, in their traffic pattern and into their slot with precision and efficiency so that a record can be achieved.
– Flyers in these slots must be able to quickly respond to and manage fall rate changes in the formation whilst staying close to their slot.
– Outer layer flyers will typically track in the first wave and so must have high quality tracking skills to join their group and create as much distance (vertical and horizontal) from the formation as quickly as possible.
